In this Beyond the Basics of Drawing class, we will focus on three areas of drawing: Composition, Perspective, Color & Light. This is not a technical drawing class, although the outline may sound a bit academic. (Believe me, I’m not a technical illustrator!) These areas of study will add more tools to your kit for drawing whatever you wish, however you want.
Week 1: Deciding Medium.
Each student will be asked to bring one drawing done in the medium of their choice for class discussion.
Week 2: Composition
Building on the first week’s discussion, the focus will be on subject and background for a new drawing.
Week 3: Perspective
Continuing with the new drawing, developing perspective and foreshortening.
Week 4: Color & Light
Finishing the drawing by adding highlights, color, light, and shadows.
Week 5: Open!
Each student, having completed the first drawing, is set up to begin a new drawing of their choosing, using the previously applied techniques and tools.
Week 6: Drawing
Completing the newest drawing to share and discuss with fellow students.
Required materials are necessary for the first class and every class:
- 14” x 17” Smooth White Drawing Pad (preferably acid free paper).
- Pencil, charcoal, colored pencils, medium of student’s choice (no pastel, oil, acrylic, or watercolor as this is not a painting class.) Color pencils that are water based are acceptable as well as Prisma color pencils and color pens.
Choose a medium that is comfortable for you or one which you want to try! The purpose is to work, but to have some fun at the same time and gain more experience.
