My name is Lynn Salem, owner of GypZie Girl Designs. I am a self-taught artist and photographer. When I was a child, my Aunt Nicky, would say to her daughter and I, “Don’t just sit there. Go do something creative.” I would look for scrap paper to doodle on. I started drawing still life images of candles, vases, and old wine bottles. When I took up photography in my later years, I noticed I was drawn to the same form of art – still life. I also shoot landscapes and another favorite of mine – composites. Composites are fun. I shoot three or more images and/or textures which I combine into one fun photo.
I love creating art, and I love creating meals. Being able to meld these two loves, I’m able to create a still life that allows me to focus on and arrange textures, colors, shapes and sizes. Once I determined the pairing and the setup, natural light pouring through my windows play an important role by enhanced the shadows, thus allowing a dance of illumination in all the right places.
Photographing a still life, whether it be food, a vase, or flowers, is exciting to me, as the whole project is mine. From the initial creative thought to the setup and shoot, and then through the final development process, I have complete ownership. Looking at the finished project, I feel much happiness, satisfaction. I am very proud of my work, and I derive much joy when I share with the public.
