Coping: Responding through Art
Juried Multimedia Exhibit
“Art has always been the raft onto which we climb to save our sanity. I don’t see a different purpose for it now.” – Dorothea Tanning (1910-2012, American painter, printmaker, sculptor, writer, and poet)
“For me, painting is a way to forget life. It is a cry in the night, a strangled laugh.” – Georges Rouault (1871-1958, French painter, draughtsman, and print artist)
“In spite of everything I shall rise again: I will take up my pencil, which I have forsaken in my great discouragement, and I will go on with my drawing” – Vincent Van Gogh (1853-1890, Dutch post-impressionist painter)
Recent events have brought immense social and societal upheaval, to which no one is immune. And people have long looked to art as a way of coping with, expressing, understanding, and escaping from change in the world we live in. This exhibit is to showcase how artists are responding to global issues, from Environmental Awareness and Natural Disasters, to Politics and Government, Racial, Social, and Economic Inequality, Gender Identity and Representation, Mental Health, and more. Your response might be a sculpture, an oil painting, pastel painting, or maybe it’s finger painting or doodling on a napkin. All forms of art, expression, and technique are welcome. How are you using your art to cope?
Artists are invited to submit short accompanying statements (up to 250 words) about what your piece is responding to or depicting, what drove you to create it, or what you hope the viewer takes away from it.

Arts Center East is kicking off the holiday season with Tables & Toasts: Food, Drink & Merriment. This exhibit celebrates gatherings and all the preparation that goes into making them happen, from the bustle in the kitchen, to the clink of glasses in the dining room. There’s a seat for everyone at our Tables & Toasts. Cheers!
Individual musicians, duos, or small ensembles are welcome to contact email@example.com if you are interested in providing music for an exhibit opening reception, or performing at Arts Center East.
