ARTIST MEMBER Catherine Whall Smith

After many years of working in the field of Education and retiring from the University of Connecticut’s Neag School of Education in 2008, Catherine Whall Smith re-entered the world of quilts, and realized how much she enjoyed the tactile sensations of needle, thread, and fabric. She resumed her passion for all things fiber. Playing with color, and the endless possibilities of simple design elements now became her day to day work. Using a limited variety of shapes to guid her, the quilt starts to take form. A dominates feature is the simple line and her interest in how it separates visual space. Each shape cut and each line sewn requires Catherine to consider the spaces that will highlight her hand-quilting techniques.
Since 1983 her art has received numerous awards, and has been exhibited in juried shows and galleries throughout New England, New York, Pennsylvania, and Texas. She is an Elected Artist member of the Music Museum of Art (MMAC), the Connecticut Academy of Fine Art (CAFA), a Juried Artist Member (JAM) of Studio Art Quilt Associates (SAQA), a juried member of Connecticut Women’s Artist Inc. (CWA), and the National Association of Women Artists Inc. (NAWA).
