ARTIST MEMBERCarolyn Emerson

Encouraged in her youth by her family and one particularly memorable teacher, Carolyn Emerson has been a lifelong painter and graphic artist. During her working career, she formed a graphic arts business in the Hartford area, creating murals that can still be seen in area schools, hospitals, and businesses. She worked in an art capacity in a motivational program in the West Hartford School system until moving to central Virginia, where she taught art in the Orange County Public School system for a number of years. She later coached adult painters in the  medium of watercolor at the Belmont Center in Spotsylvania.  Other artful endeavors over the years have included costume and set design for various theater groups.

Initially favoring oils, in the last thirty years, she has focused primarily on the challenges of watercolor, entering juried shows in Maine, Virginia, and Connecticut, achieving recognition with competitive awards in those states. She has continued to increase her understanding and application of water media since her formal education through frequent workshops with such notable watercolorists as Charles Reid, Janet Rogers, and numerous local artists in assorted mediums.

Currently she teaches classes in her South Windsor studio and conducts workshops in Connecticut and occasionally, Virginia. her work covers a broad range of subjects including land and seascapes, portraiture, and still life. She is available for commissioned work.

To lose all sense of time and surroundings in the creation process must be among life’s greatest pleasures. Ultimate satisfaction is found every bit as much in the ‘doing’ as in the ‘done.’
